Epoxy vs polished concrete: which floor wins?
Epoxy coatings and polished concrete are the two most popular ways to finish a concrete floor, and they solve different problems. Polished concrete refines the slab you already have; an epoxy system adds a new engineered surface on top. Here's the honest comparison.
Polished concrete: refine the slab
Polishing grinds and densifies the existing concrete to a smooth, low-maintenance sheen. It's durable and never delaminates because there's no coating to fail — but you're limited to the color and character of the slab you have, and cracks or stains show through.
Epoxy: a new engineered surface
An epoxy or resin system bonds a new, seamless surface over the slab — so you get any color, a decorative metallic or flake finish, chemical resistance and a moisture barrier where needed. It hides slab flaws that polishing can't. The trade-off is that it must be installed correctly to bond and last.
Which should you pick?
Want to keep costs low on a sound slab and don't mind an industrial look? Polish it. Want color, decorative depth, chemical resistance, or a floor over a stained or damaged slab? Coat it. In humid South Florida, a coating also lets us add a vapor barrier that a polish can't.
